Pasteurized Personalities

A fun “get to know you” type question. Also, vanilla is underrated as an ice cream flavor, and I will hear no slander against it!

I’m pretty proud of how bright the colors turned out on this one.

FAWKSSSPLOOOOOSHUUUN!!

Sure, it sounds cool, and it’s fun every now and then, but it’s harder to make and easy to get overwhelmed by.

Vanilla is considered “boring”, but it’s hard to get tired of quality vanilla ice cream.

  1. Pumpkin. Apparently, since my birthday’s the day before Halloween, everything’s pumpkin.

  2. Vanilla is an orchid, with all of the difficulty that implies. It only grows in a specific band along the equator and is pollinated by one species of bee, so it is typically hand-pollinated. The fact that vanilla is used to mean boring is a testament to human ingenuity; we liked the taste of something so much, we took that rare and difficult spice and made it ubiquitous.

  3. I’m not much of an ice cream eater (my teeth are awfully sensitive to cold, making eating ice cream a very conditional pleasure). But on the rare occasions I eat it, I actually prefer plain vanilla, at most with a whiff of strawberry. Then again, I generally find many of the special flavours you can get for all kinds of things these days overdone and, as often as not, plain awful. I read a book lately which talked about how, in the renaissance when the discovery of America and the opening of sea routes to the East made spices available in greater quantities and varieties and at much lower prices than previously, people went overboard putting spices in the most unsuitable things and in the craziest combinations, just because they could – seems to me we are in a similar period now.

  4. I always find it funny that ‘vanilla’ is considered ‘plain’ considering it was once a rare and valuable spice.
That said, good vanilla icecream, where you can see and taste the vanilla beans is still rare, as most vanilla flavoured products are artificially flavoured.

But good vanilla icecream is GOOD vanilla ice cream.
